It lives in shallow waters 3-25 meters below the ocean surface over rocks, rubble, sand, and on shallow reef substrate near islands. It grows to a length of 50 centimeters.[2][3]
The island cowfish has been classified as a 'Data deficient' species by the IUCN Red List due to a lack of information regarding the species. No conservation efforts have been made towards the species, although its range does overlap with several marine protected areas.[3]

Acanthostracion notacanthus is een straalvinnige vis uit de familie van de koffervissen (Ostraciidae).[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is, als Ostracion notacanthus, voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1863 door Pieter Bleeker.[2]
De soort komt voor in het oosten van de Atlantische Oceaan, bij de Azoren, Sint Helena en Ascension, voor de kust van Ghana en Angola, en is gerapporteerd van Sao Tome.
