Cells are united into chains by their fused setae. Each valve is fringed by 12-32 bristles. The length of the setae is about twice the valve diameter. Their bifurcated ends lie in a plane parallel to the chain axis. Terminal setae are morphologically distinct from the fused bristles. They are curved backwards, are spirally undulate and are not bifurcated.
