Pinus bungeana, native to China.The needles are two to four inches long, somewhat sharp/stiff, not densely clustered, and in bundles of three. This is a good example of the different stages of tamarack or larch trees losing their needles. (they are the yellow ones). They are a deciduous conifer that lights up our Montana forests this time of year as they turn brilliant yellow, then brown, then drop the needles.

Here in Schweizergarten they grow side by side.

2010-11-09 Burgenland, district Mattersburg - view towards Kogelberg region and (background) Schneeberg mountain range (Rohrbacher Wald, 385 m AMSL).Easily distinguished from distance are spruce, pine and larch; the broadleaf trees you see here already have shed their leaves, most should be Fagus sylvatica and Quercus species - but other species certainly also are mixed in.

This cone is protected by about 2 feet of snow - located around 4100ft above sea level on Mount Mansfield. I shot from underneath to get a clear view of it - one of my Flickr friends loves cones : ). Cheers, Paul
