This species was considered a junior synonym of Melinna cristata but subsequently re-established by Mackie & Pleijel (1995) after thorough examination of northern European material.

Mackie & Pleijel (1995) re-established this species as separate from Melinna cristata and provide a comparison of diagnostic features distinguishing it from M. cristata and M. albicincta (table 1). A thorough description of this species can be found on pages 111-116 and figures 3-4.

This species was first found in the stomach of haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and therefore seems to be preyed upon by bottom-feeding fish.
