They are native to Poland, Spain, Greece, Sweden, Belarus, Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Algeria, Iran, Latvia, Yugoslavia, Austria, Eastern North America, Estonia, Ireland, The Netherlands, Bulgaria, Turkey, Norway, France, Morocco, Belgium, Moldova, Albania, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Romania, Denmark, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, and Ukraine. They have simple, broad leaves and drupes. Flowers are visited by Callophrys gryneus and Chrysotoxum cautum. Individuals can grow to 3.6 m.
