Cathartolinum vernale (Wooton) Small
Linum vernale Wooton, Bull. Torrey Club 25 : 452. 1898.
Plants 1—1 dm. tall, lightor pale-green and sometimes glaucescent when young. Stems usually branched at the base and throughout, the branches striate or striate-angled in age, glabrous, stiff and erect or nearly so, terminating in open few-flowered cymes ; leaves numerous, crowded and imbricated at the base of the stem and the branches, erect or ascending, the blades thick, narrowly linear to subulate, those of the lower leaves entire, those of the upper leaves often glandular-toothed, all sharply acute ; bracts subulate, glandular-toothed ; outer sepals lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, becoming 6-8 mm. long, acuminate, rather evenly glandular-toothed ; inner sepals mostly oblong-lanceolate, shorter than the outer ones, and more evenly arid finely toothed; petals yellow, 15-20 mm. long, each with a dark blotch near the base ; capsules ovoid, 4 mm. long.
Type locality : Tortugas Mountain, about five miles east of Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, New Mexico.
Distribution : Texas and New Mexico.
