Large evergreen tree. Bark brownish, roughish and scaling, cream when slashed, quickly turning blackish. Leaves aromatic, leathery, 8 - 20 cm, more or less broadly elliptic, glossy green above, somewhat paler and dull green below with 8-10 pairs of lateral veins, fine net-veining visible below; apex pointed; margin entire. Flowers in lax axillary heads, whitish to yellowish, fading to brownish. Fruit ovoid, acorn-like, up to 2 cm.
