Common in riverine and floodplain habitats, frequently in association with the striped robber (Brycinus lateralis). Frequency of occurence in Caprivi: frequently in sandy streams, occasionally on rocky streams, common in standing deep water, abundant in shallow swamps, and occasionally in shallow flood plains (Ref. 037065). Feeds on insects and small organisms.

The dashtail barb (Enteromius poechii) is a species of cyprinid fish in the genus Enteromius which is found in the rivers of western central Africa from Zimbabwe and Namibia north to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
