A small, glabrous tree or shrub, about 2 m. high, with a grayish bark, bearing hardcorky prickles, two or three of them sometimes united and forming ridges, 1-1.5 cm. long, or wart-like or subpyramidal ; branches, petioles, and rachis unarmed ; leaves odd-pinnate, or rarely equally pinnate, 3.5-10 cm. long ; leaflets 3-9, elliptic to oval or obovate, the lateral leaflets 1.5^4.3 cm. long, 0.8-2.8 cm. broad, the terminal leaflet often longer and broader, rounded or obtuse at the apex, acute and somewhat inequilateral at the base, rather dark-green and lustrous above, paler beneath, coriaceous, the margin crenulate, the glands beneath usually impressed and opaque, rarely very sparsely pellucid-glandular ; petioles and rachis grooved ; inflorescence terminal, 1-4 cm. long; staminate flowers (unexpanded): calyx 1.7-1.9 mm. broad, the sepals 3, triangular, acute or obtuse, the margins denticulate and somewhat lacerate ; petals 3, elliptic to oval, 2.5-3 mm. long, 1-2 mm. broad ; stamens 3, the anthers oblong to oblong-ovate ; pistillate flowers : gynoecium 3-carpellary; follicles 2 or 3, occasionally only 1, and accompanied by two abortive carpels, subglobose or ovate, 4-6 mm. long, brownish or greenish-brown at maturity, apiculate; seeds subovoid or rarely subglobose, 3.5-4.5 mm. long, occasionally obtusely pointed at the ends, black, shining.
