Onykia carriboea Lesueur, 1821

DIAGNOSIS.—Mantle muscular, almost ellipsoid in immatures, becoming cylindrical with growth. Fins wider than long, length about 25% ML, width 70%–75% ML, subrhombic, with convex anterior and posterior margins and blunt lateral angles. Tentacle club with medial hooks and marginal suckers, well-defined fixing apparatus with 8 or 9 suckers present. Gladius with short, recurved rostrum. Surface smooth, with crowded purplish chromatophores and silvery sheen. Dorsal mantle and dorsal head particularly deep purplish.

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION.—Lesueur, 1821:98, pl. 9: figs. 1, 2a-e.

TYPE LOCALITY.—Gulf of Mexico and in Gulf Stream among fuci (= Sargassum spp.).

DEPOSITION OF TYPE.—Holotype: Academy of Natural Science, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; probably no longer extant (Voss, 1962).

Paratypes: None.

DISTRIBUTION.—Tropical to warm temperate Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, surface.

Onykia carriboea, the tropical clubhook squid, is a squid in the family Onychoteuthidae, the type species of the genus Onykia. It is known with certainty only from immature specimens. The type locality of O. carriboea is the Gulf of Mexico. Onykia robsoni has been suggested as a junior synonym, owing to similarities between the species.[3]

Onykia carriboea is een soort in de taxonomische indeling van de inktvissen, een klasse dieren die tot de stam der weekdieren (Mollusca) behoort. De inktvis komt enkel in zout water voor en is in staat om van kleur te veranderen. Hij beweegt zich voort door water in zijn mantel te pompen en het er via de sifon weer krachtig uit te persen. De inktvis is een carnivoor en zijn voedsel bestaat voornamelijk uit vis, krabben, kreeften en weekdieren die ze met de zuignappen op hun grijparmen vangen.

De inktvis komt uit het geslacht Onykia en behoort tot de familie Onychoteuthidae. Onykia carriboea werd in 1821 beschreven door Lesueur.[1]
