Another example of adaptive radiation in Hawaii with 47 endemic species, 2 endemic genera (Haplostachys & Stenogyne), while this genus is nearly endemic. Of the 28 species of Phyllostegia, 27 are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and the other species is endemic to Tahiti, likely evolving from a Hawaiian species. I found a few populations of P. ambigua in Puu Makaala on different trails. It is possible that they were outplanted. This species is endemic to Maui and Hawaii islands. Elevation of both populations around 4400ft/1341m.
