"Stylocoeniella generally forms brown-red or greenish encrustations that are seldom more than a few centimeteres in diameter. Small knobby and columnar colonies have been reported from the Great Barrier Reef. A ring of 12 small pale brown tentacles may be extended during the day. The corallites are crowded closely together or separate by coensteum covered with minute spines. Calice are round, about 0.5 to 1.0 mm in diameter and are not raised above the coral surface. The septa are barely visible. Stylocoeniella is an inconspicuous coral and is readily overlooked among other larger and more exotic reef corals. It often grows in crevices or on the undersides of rock or corals and may be fairly common in certain localities." (Dr. Elizabeth M. Wood).
