Distribution

This species is endemic to the temperate forests of Chile and Argentina. In Chile, the distribution extends from Lanalhue Lake (37° 55'S; 73° 19'W), Arauco Province, to Palena 43°S (approximately). In Argentina, the species is restricted to southern Río Negro Province and northern Chubut Province (including a single record from Parque Nacional Los Alerces). It has an altitudinal range of 200-800m asl.

Adult morphology Snout-vent in adults: 45-55 rnm in males, 50-65 mm in females. Head round, with cephalic crests visible (especially the prominent cantha1 and postorbital crests). Snout slightIy rounded, with lateral protruding nostrils, slightly closer to the tip of snout than .to the eye. Interocular distance larger than upper eyelid. Tympanum small, encircled by the parotoid gland and the lower border of the postorbital crest. Tongue oval, very enlarged. Parotoids rounded or subtriangular, partialIy located on a line internal to the border of the upper eyelid. Foreleg reaching the sacral region with the tip of the third finger in both sexes; forearm slightly developed in males. Hindleg slender; when is adpressed, heel reaches the tympanum in males, and the post-tympanum region in females. Tarsal fold weak. Fingers almost free; toes webbed to 2/3 of their length, largely fringed up to the tip. Rate of the finger lengths: II-IV-I-III. Metacarpal and metatarsal tubercles well-developed: strong subarticular tubercles. Small grayish circular thumb pads in males.. Skin strongly glandulous, with flattened not keratinous warts: belly smooth. Coloration: Dorsum dark gray or brown, with black spots surrounding the flattened warts. Belly bright white, scattered with reticulated black spots; circular white spots on the dark wrinkled skin of the lower surface of thighs. Spots and ventral reticulation fain ring in young specimens

Rhinella rubropunctata (common name: red-spotted toad) is a species of toad in the family Bufonidae that is found in southern Chile and Argentina.[1][2] Its natural habitats are humid to xeric temperate forests and open environments. It tolerates a certain degree of disturbance. Breeding takes place in shallow temporary ponds near rivers, reservoirs and lakes. It is threatened by habitat degradation and fragmentation.[1]
