Brief Summary

provided by EOL authors

Scinax nasicus, the lesser snouted treefrog, is a species of hylid frog found in Paraguay, northern and central Argentina, Uruguay, eastern Bolivia, and southern Brazil, up to 1000 m (3300 feet) in altitude. Common in forests, wetland, riparian areas, urban, and agricultural lands especially of the Chaco area, the lesser snouted treefrog also comes into houses in urban areas.Because it is well adapted to climbing, with adhesive pads on its fingers and toes, it can frequently be found on windows and walls.Scinax nasicus has a distinctive pattern on its back and can be distinguished from the closely related S. fuscovarious by yellow markings on the hind leg (Carezzano and Cabrera 2010; Smith 2006). It is a small treefrog, reaching up to 35mm (1.4 inches) snout vent length. The taxonomy of S. nasicus is not fully resolved, but it appears to be a species complex consisting of several cryptic species (Kwet et al. 2004).

Scinax nasicus breeds in the rainy season, from spring to late summer.Females lay gelatinous clusters of eggs that stick to vegetation in ponds and temporary pools, they prefer water sources in open areas. The tadpoles are typical microphagous tadpoles, with teeth adapted for scraping food particles from surfaces (Candioti et al. 2004). Work has shown that in Argentina, tadpoles of this species which develop in pools in agricultural areas are exposed to xenobiotics, washed-off nutrients and agrochemicals from nearby fields which in combination with eutrification of ponds that these chemicals cause, significantly effects the health status of these frogs, leaving them vulnerable to parasites, hemolysis and disease, and deformities (Peltzer et al. 2003; Lajmanovich et al. 2003).
