Brachionus angularis Gosse 1851

Cosmopolite

Planktonic in fresh and brackish waters, often mass development in the latter. Perennial, eurythermous; feeding on unicellular algae and detritus.

Lorica with dorsal and ventral plate, moderately flattened dorso-ventrally, firm. Lorica lightly to heavily stippled; dorsal plate with strong to very weak pattern of ridges. Two short antero-dorsal median spines; intermediate and lateral spines absent or occasionally present and strongly reduced. Antero-ventral margin weakly undulate, somewhat elevated toward middle, with median sinus. Posterior spines absent. Posterior end broadly rounded, rarely with weak lateral postero-lateral edges angular. Ventral part of foot opening large, margins parallel to convergent, with short, blunt lateral projections. Trophi with all characteristics of the genus. Polymorphic species.

Total body length: 90 - 210 µm. Body width: 70 - 150 µm.

Distance between anterolateral spines: 55-95 µm.
