Systématique et taxinomie

Vignoli et Prendini en 2009^[1] séparent les genres en deux sous-familles les Typhlochactinae (Sotanochactas, Stygochactas et Typhlochactas) et les Alacraninae (Alacran).

Note

Typhlochactidae er en gruppe (familie) av skorpioner. De er mer eller mindre hulelevende og bare kjent fra den østlige delen av Mexico.

Utseende

Små til middelsstore (10-70 mm), lyst fargede skorpioner. De har mange trekk som er vanlige hos hulelevende dyr, såkalte troglomorfe trekk. Fargen er forholdsvis lys (brungul eller brunrød), skallet nokså tynt, øynene er mer eller mindre reduserte, pedipalper (klør), bein og hale er lange og tynne. Kroppen er ganske slank.

Levevis

De lever inne i, eller rundt åpningen til, huler. Som de fleste hulelevende arter er de sjeldne, Vignoli og Prendini (2009 [1]) fant at det i løpet av 40 års undersøkelser bare var samlet inn 29 eksemplarer av denne familien, fordelt på ni forskjellige arter. Fire av artene er bare kjent fra ett enkelt eksemplar.

Farlige arter

Ingenting er kjent om giftigheten til disse skorpionene, men det at halen og brodden er så spinkle kan tyde på at de ikke bruker disse svært mye, og dermed sannsynligvis ikke er spesielt giftige.

Utbredelse

Artene i denne familien finnes bare i den østlige delen av Mexico, i et smalt belte langs østsiden av den sentrale fjellkjeden.
