Erect or ascending perennial ; stems usually branched and leafy, hirsute with scattered spreading hairs or nearly glabrous, 1-4 dm. high ; stipules adnate to the petioles and connate around the stem, deeply dissected into oblong or linear divisions ; lower leaves petioled ; petioles 1-4 cm. long, hirsute with scattered hairs ; blades orbicular or reniform in outline, 3-divided to near the base and the lateral divisions usually deeply 2-cleft ; divisions cuneate-obovate, 1-1.5 cm. long, sparingly hirsute on both sides or glabrate above, lightgreen, deeply dissected into oblong or linear lobes ; blades of the upper stem-leaves, especially those of the inflorescence, sessile, obovate, and dissected, together with the almost similar stipules forming a perfoliate leaf ; flowers nearly sessile, in small axillary clusters ; hypanthium urceolate, in fruit almost round, glabrous, 0.75 mm. long; bractlets and sepals glabrous, ovate or lance-ovate, about 0.3 mm. long; pistils usually 2; achenes oval, glabrous, nearly 1 mm. long.
Type locality : Nevada de Toluca, Mexico. Distribution : Mountains throughout Mexico.

Cespitose perennial ; stems ascending or erect, branched, leafy, strongly hirsute with
spreading hairs; lower leaf -blades short-petioled, the upper sessile; stipules 4-5 mm. long,
connate and adnate to the petioles, dissected into linear-lanceolate divisions ; leaf-blades 3-
parted to near the base, sparingly hirsute above, more densely so beneath ; divisions cuneate,
1 cm. long or less, deeply toothed or cleft with linear or lanceolate divisions ; flowers in
small clusters in the axils of the upper leaves ; hypanthium urceolate, sparingly hirsute,
about 1 mm. long ; bractlets and sepals lanceolate, about half as long, acute ; pistils usually 2.
Type locality : Pillao, Peru.
Distribution : In the mountains from Bolivia to Central Mexico.
