Hoover in the Flora of San Luis Obispo: 'Calyx with stellate-pubescent hairs, but hardly tomentose. The surface of the lobes not concealed'

Malacothamnus is supposed to be a shrub or subshrub as distinguished from Spaeralcea, a perennial. Image is meant to show woody stems.
