Perennial herbs, dying back each year, with corms. Inflorescence a spike. Floral bracts green or membranous above; the inner smaller than the outer. Flowers actinomorphic, usually white or pink, opening in the evening; tepals subequal, spreading or cup-shaped, united below into a straight or curved tube. Stamens symmetrically arranged. Style dividing at the mouth of the perianth tube into 3 large spreading branches. Fruit a capsule,
sometimes dehiscing only in upper third. Seeds sometimes slightly winged.
