A tree 7-12 m. high or sometimes .more; leaves odd-pinnate, 1.5-2.8 dm. long, the petioles and rachis minutely strigillose to glabrous; leaflets 3-9, alternate, oblong-elliptic to elliptic or somewhat oval, 6-15 cm. long, 2.5-7.5 cm. broad, more or less inequilateral and acute at the base, acuminate at the apex, glabrous above, glabrous or hirsutulous on the midrib beneath, petioluled; inflorescence axillary and subterminal, the branches strigillose when young; calyx 4or 5-lobed, the lobes short-triangular-ovate, acute; corolla deeply 4of 5-lobed, the lobes coherent below, oblong-ovate, about 1.5 mm. long, 1 mm. broad, reflexed, more or less strigillose; staminal tube urn-shaped, glabrous; ovary subglobose or globose-ovoid, densely hirsute; style glabrous; capsule ovoid to subglobose, 15-20 mm. long, usually densely velutinous; seeds 8-12 mm. long, surrounded by a dark-purple aril.
