Widely distributed around the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific oceans, with specific reports from Sri Lanka, west coast of India and the Andaman Islands, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan. Records cited by Gosliner et al. (2008) from New Caledonia, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Australia are of Goniobranchus fabulus, not G. preciosus.
