Oeneis alberta is native to southern Canada from Alberta to Manitoba, with many small separate populations scattered through the central United States (Scott 1986). Habitats are dry bunchgrass hills. Host plant is bunchgrass. Eggs are laid singly. Individuals overwinter as older larvae; species is possibly biennial. There is one flight each year with the approximate flight time May 15- June 15 (Scott 1986).

Adults feed on mud. Males both perch and patrol for females (Scott, 1986).
