Leaves are stalked, opposite at the plant base, alternate up the stem and opposite on fertile branches. Uppermost leaves are usually reddish towards base. Lamina are elliptic to obovate or fiddle-shaped, hairless above and usually with a few appressed hairs below. Flowerheads are cyathia irregularly clustered at the ends of stems and branches; involucre 2–3 mm long. Fruit are 3–4 mm long, hairless capsules. Flowering occurs over most of the year.
