Tarentola americana (Gray 1831)

The American wall gecko (Tarentola americana) is a species of lizard in the family Phyllodactylidae. The species is endemic to Cuba and the Bahamas.^[2] There are two recognized subspecies.

Subspecies

Including the nominotypical subspecies, two subspecies are recognized as being valid.^[2]

Nota bene: A trinomial authority in parentheses indicates that the subspecies was originally described in a genus other than Tarentola.

Etymology

The subspecific name, warreni, is in honor of C. Rhea Warren who collected the holotype.^[3]

Geographic range

T. a. americana is found on the island of Cuba and associated islets. T. a. warreni is found on some of the northern islands of the Bahamas.^[2]

Reproduction

T. americana is oviparous.^[2]

La salamanquesa dormilona o salamanquesa de Cuba (Tarentola americana) es el mayor reptil de la familia Gekkonidae de las Antillas y el Caribe, alcanzando hasta 24 cm de longitud. Es común en zonas naturales, y es muy similar en morfología y temperamento al geco tokay (Gekko gecko), aunque es de un color gris blanquecino y carece de los tonos brillantes característicos del geco tokay. La salamanquesa de Cuba adopta como refugio cuevas o madrigueras abandonadas de otras especies, y a menudo se la encuentra en compañía de los murciélagos, con los que compite en alimentación.
