Varanus keithhornei Wells & Wellington 1985

Der Australische Baumwaran (Varanus keithhornei) ist eine Art der Warane, die endemisch in Nordostaustralien ist. Sie wird zu der Untergattung Euprepiosaurus gezählt, wo sie die einzige Art der V. prasinus-Gruppe auf dem australischen Festland ist.^[1] Die Erstbeschreibung dieser Art erfolgte durch Wells & Wellington, 1985.^[2]

Körperbau, Aussehen

Der Australische Baumwaran kann ausgewachsen eine Gesamtkörperlänge von bis zu 75 cm erreichen. Vom Habitus ähnelt der Australische Baumwaran stark den anderen Vertretern der Prasinus-Gruppe. Zu den anderen Arten bestehen jedoch Unterschiede bei den Schuppenmerkmalen. Dieses äußerliche Merkmal sorgte für den Art-Status von Varanus keithhornei. Die Grundfärbung der Schuppen auf der Oberseite ist mattschwarz. Die Kopfschuppen sind relativ groß und glatt. Manche Scutum oculare sind vergrößert, aber weisen kaum Unterschiede zu den Interocularia auf. Das nach oben und außen gerichtete Nasenloch befindet sich näher zur Schnauzenspitze als zum Auge. Um die Körpermitte sind 75-90 Schuppenreihen angeordnet. Der Schwanz ist seitlich ein wenig zusammengedrückt, ohne dass ein sichtbarer Kiel vorhanden ist. Einen leichten Kiel haben jedoch die Schwanzschuppen, welche in regelmäßigen Ringen angeordnet sind.

Verbreitung

Die Verbreitung des Australischen Baumwarans beschränkt sich auf ein kleines Gebiet in der Iron Range und der McIlwraith Range auf der Kap-York-Halbinsel im äußersten Norden Queenslands.^[3] IRWIN 1994 beobachtete 4 Tiere in dem Gebiet der Iron Range. 3 dieser Tiere wurden dabei gefangen, als sie sich vermutlich bei der Nahrungssuche im Laub auf dem Boden aufhielten. Das vierte Tier befand sich auf einem Baum in einer Höhe von 5 Metern.^[4]

Systematik

Die erste Nachweisung dieser Art erfolgte von CZECHURA (1980). Aber erst SPRACKLAND (1991b) hat bei einer taxonomischen Überarbeitung bei der Art eine Verbindung zur Prasinus-Gruppe festgestellt. Der Australische Baumwaran ist somit der erste und bisher einzige bekannte Vertreter der Prasinus-Gruppe, der auf dem Festland Australiens endemisch ist. Sprackland hatte jedoch übersehen, das WELLS & WELLINGTON (1985) dieser Art schon den wissenschaftlichen Namen V. keithhornei gegeben hatten. Somit gilt der von SPRACKLAND eingeführte Name Varanus teriae als ein Synonym von V. keithhornei. In der englischen Sprache ist Varanus keithhornei unter den Namen canopy goanna, blue-nosed goanna^[5] und Nesbit River monitor^[6] bekannt.

Varanus keithhornei, commonly known as the canopy goanna, Keith Horne's monitor, blue-nosed tree monitor,^[4] or Nesbit River monitor,^[5] is a species of monitor lizards native to northeast Australia. It is a member of the Varanus prasinus species group.^[6]

This monitor lizard is found in a restricted area of less than 100 km² near the Claudie and Nesbit rivers, in the McIlwraith and Iron Ranges of the Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland.^[2][7][8]

Description

The colouration of V. keithhornei is dark black on the upper side. It has moderately big and smooth head scales. Its tail has no visible keel.^[6] The canopy goanna is small for a monitor lizard, reaching a total length up to 77 cm,^[9] but more robust than other species of the V. prasinus species complex, and can be further distinguished from them by its colour and the conical throat scales.^[8]

Specimens were originally assigned to the species Varanus prasinus by Czechura in 1980,^[8] but Wells and Wellington declared it a new species 5 years later.

Diet

They forage in the trees and the leaf litter for insects such as orthopterans, roaches, and beetles.^[8]

Descrizione

La colorazione di V. keithhornei è nera sulla regione dorsale. Le squame della testa sono abbastanza grandi e lisce. La coda non presenta una carena visibile^[6]. Per essere un varano, quello della volta ha dimensioni piuttosto piccole, raggiungendo al massimo una lunghezza totale di 77 cm^[7].

Distribuzione e habitat

L'areale del varano della volta è ristretto ad una piccola area nei pressi del fiume Nesbit, sui monti McIlwraith e Iron, nella penisola di Capo York (Queensland settentrionale)^[1][8].

Biologia

Come le altre specie di varani del gruppo prasinus, è un ottimo arrampicatore, come si può intuire dalla prensilità della coda.
