California's Mojave Desert is one of the locations of occurrence of this species. Some of the common flora associates are Shockley's goldenhead, Acamptopappus shockleyi; Spiny menodora, Menodora spinescens; Desert senna; and Mojave dalea, Psorothamnus arborescens. Example cacti associates in this desert are: Silver cholla, Opuntia echinocarpa; Mojave prickly pear, O. erinacea; Beavertail cactus, O. basilaris; and Many-headed barrel cactus, Echinocactus polycephalus. The chief megaflora of this desert region is the Joshua tree, Yucca brevifolia. Soils here in the Mojave are mainly coarse sands and gravels with many outcrops that offer diverse habitat niches.

A much branched shrub, the branches striate, glabrous, or sparingly pubescent above, pale green. Leaves about 6 cm. long, or shorter; leaflets 2 or 3 distant pairs, ovate to suborbicular, 2-6 mm. long, obtuse or acute, pubescent or glabrate; inflorescence 5-10 cm. long, several-flowered; pedicels slender, glabrous or sparingly pubescent, 1-2 cm. long; sepals 5-6 mm. long; petals 8-12 mm. long; legume linear, turgid, subulate-tipped, glabrous or sparingly pubescent, spinulose-tipped, 2-3.5 cm. long, about 6 mm. wide.
Type locality: Mountains between Fort Mohave and Cajon Pass, California. Distribution: Southern California, western Nevada and Arizona.

Senna armata is a species of flowering plant in the legume family known by the common names spiny senna and desert senna. It is native to the desert regions around the intersection of Nevada, Arizona, eastern California and northern Baja California, where it grows in sandy and rocky habitat, such as arroyos. It is a shrub growing up to a meter tall, its grooved, branching stems often narrowing to thorns at their tips. The spiny branches are coated in tubular hairs which help protect it from hot desert air. The spine-tipped leaves are each made up of two to four pairs of small leaflets. The leaves are ephemeral, dropping soon after emerging, leaving the shrub naked most of the time. Flowers occur singly or in small clusters in leaf axils. They are fragrant and showy, with five petals in shades of yellow to salmon pink, each measuring roughly a centimeter long. The fruit is a legume pod up to 4 centimeters long.
