Description of Lecythium

Small to medium sized species. Test: round, lenticular or pyriform, flexible membrane, follows size changes of plasma during feeding or starvation. Aperture often between folds. Plasma fills the test completely, nucleus vesicular or ovular. Division longitudinal, closed orthomitosis, nucleolus disintegrates (L. hyalinum). Habitat: freshwater; in culture the individuals are found in groups. Feeding: herbivore and bacterivore. Type species: Lecythium hyalinum (Ehrenberg, 1838).
