Plants 15–60 cm. Basal leaves: blades (dark green) nearly deltate or broadly lanceolate to lance-linear, 15–35 cm, margins entire or irregularly serrate (sometimes undulate), sometimes strigillose, not ciliate, faces hirsute, hirtellous, scabrous, or strigillose (sometimes vernicose); cauline leaves smaller distally (petiolate or sessile). Heads usually borne singly, sometimes 2–3+ in corymbiform arrays. Involucres ± hemispheric, (15–)20–30+ mm diam. Phyllaries 26–40, subequal, ± herbaceous, margins ciliate, faces (abaxial) hispid, hispidulous, or strigillose; outer 15–25 mm (not or little surpassing discs). Ray florets (8–)12–14; laminae 15–25 mm. Cypselae 7–8 mm, ± strigillose. 2n = 38.

Wyethia angustifolia has a bioregional distribution in California ranging from the South Coast Ranges, through the Sierra Nevada, North Coast Ranges and northwestern California. Outside California the range includes Oregon and the southern elements of Washington. Elevations of occurrence are below 2000 meters. Typical habitats are grasslands and open woodlands.
With a common name of Narrow leaf mule ears, this sturdy plant achieves a height of 30 to 90 centimeters. The more or less rough-hairy leaves manifest as basal blades 10 to 50 centimeters long; blades are oblanceolate. The yellow flowers are prominent.

It is native to the west coast of the United States from Washington to California, where it grows in grassland, meadows, and other open habitat. It is a perennial herb growing from a tough taproot and caudex unit and producing a stem 30 to 90 centimeters tall. The leaves have lance-shaped blades up to 50 centimeters tall. The inflorescence produces one or more large sunflower-like flower heads at the top of the hairy stem. The head has narrow, hairy phyllaries at the base. It contains up to 21 yellow ray florets each up to 4.5 centimeters long and many yellow disc florets. The fruit is an achene which may be nearly 2 centimeters long including its pappus.
