Callistoctopus is a genus of nocturnal, orange octopuses in the family Octopodidae.[1] They are readily identifiable by their reddish coloring, the white papillae that line their bodies, and their long arms. Though sympatric with diurnal Octopus species, they avoid competition by hunting at night. In acknowledgement of this preference, many species of Callistoctopus are referred to as night octopuses. Well-known species include C. macropus (Atlantic white-spotted octopus) and the type species C. ornatus (ornate octopus), both of which are harvested for human consumption as seafood.

Callistoctopus è un genere di molluschi cefalopodi della famiglia degli Octopodidae, noti con il nome di polpi macchiati o polpi notturni. In passato le specie del genere Callistoctopus erano state attribuite al più grande genere Octopus.
Nel Mar Mediterraneo vive una sola specie, la polpessa (Callistoctopus macropus), un polpo notturno abbastanza comune in Italia e ritenuto erroneamente da molti come la femmina del polpo comune.
I polpi del genere Callistoctopus sono facilmente identificabili per la loro colorazione rossastra, per le papille (macchie) bianche che rivestono i loro corpi e per le loro braccia lunghe e snelle.
Sebbene siano simpatrici con le specie diurne di polpi, evitano la competizione cacciando solo di notte. In riconoscimento di questa preferenza, molte specie di Callistoctopus sono indicate con il nome di "polpi notturni".
