Plants 2-5 dm. tall or rarely smaller, pubescent, the caudex very short ; leaves crowded, the blades spatulate, 5-12 cm. long, or sometimes shorter, sharply and coarsely toothed especially above the middle, more pubescent on the narrow petiole-like bases than above ; scapes solitary or several together, often shaggy-pubescent, widely branched ; bracts leaflike, at least those on the main axis ; flowers numerous, none replaced by bulblets ; sepals oblong-ovate to lanceolate, 1-2 mm. long ; petals 3.5-5.5 mm. long, the 3 upper with lanceolate blades truncate at the base, the 2 lower with elliptic or spatulate blades ; follicles 4.5-5 mm. long, the style-tips slightly spreading.
Type locality : Mountains of the Carolinas.
Distribution : AUeghenies, Virginia to Georgia.

Micranthes petiolaris, commonly known as cliff saxifrage, is a species of flowering plant in the saxifrage family. It is native to the Southern Appalachian Mountains where it is found on exposed boulders and rocky seeps, often at high elevation.[1] It is a perennial that produces small white flowers with yellow spots in the summer.
Recent genetic studies have shown is more closely related to arctic species of Micranthes than to the other species of the Southern Appalachians. This indicates that it did not evolve within the other southern Micranthes, but migrated to the southern Appalachians from the north, possibly during glacial periods.[2]
