This species can reach a maximum length of 10 centimetres (3.9 in) TL.[2] The specific name honours the naturalist Thomas Whitelegge (1850-1927) who was a friend of Ogilby's friend and who collected the type.[3]

Heteroclinus whiteleggii is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van beschubde slijmvissen (Clinidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1894 door Ogilby.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2009. De omvang van de populatie is volgens de IUCN stabiel.[1]
