Head and body gray-brown with darker scale edges, paler ventrally. Numerous dark spots on scales on operculum and region circumscribed by pectoral fin. Flexible dorsal spines; caudal fin rounded in juveniles, double emarginate in adults; pectoral fin base yellowish, the rest unpigmented; pale pelvic fins with 2 reddish bars, at the center and near the base. Skin dark, almost black around anus. Orangish iris.

Inhabits coral and rocky reefs and grass bed areas to depths of about 30 m (Ref. 9710). Occurs singly or in small groups (Ref. 9710). Feeds mainly on marine angiosperms and epiphytic algae. Caught mainly with traps, nets and other types of artisanal gear.

Die Steroog-papegaaivis (Calotomus viridescens) is 'n vis wat voorkom in die Indiese-Pasifiese area, die Rooisee en aan die ooskus van Afrika vanaf Oman tot by die Aliwal-bank. In Engels staan die vis bekend as die Star-eye parrotfish.

Pienk strepe wat van die oë uitstraal.
Die vis se kop, lyf en vinne is blougroen of bruin met onreëlmatige pienk of wit kolletjies op. Die dominante mannetjie se kop is groen met pienk strepe wat in die vorm van ster vanaf die oë uitstraal en daar is ook drie pienk strepe oor die snoet. Daar is partykeer klein pers kolletjies bokant die pektorale vinne. Die vis word tot 50 cm groot.
Habitat
Die vis leef in koraalriwwe, seegras beddings en sanderige areas wat digte alge het in water wat 2 – 27 m diep is. Die vis vreet hoofsaaklik alge en seegras.

Vissen Calotomus viridescens is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van papegaaivissen (Scaridae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1835 door Rüppell.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2009.[1]
