小型之隆頭魚，體色多彩多姿，紋路變化多端，是較適合水族觀賞的魚類。其有斑駁的保護色，亦常會鑽入砂中，所以潛水在美麗而隱密的珊瑚礁海域，並不易看見。可食用，但個體小，較無食用價值。

17-20；背鰭棘部尖硬，後部較前部高；背鰭與臀鰭軟條後部尖形；腹鰭第一棘稍延長；尾鰭圓形。幼魚藍綠色，頭及體具許多黃色的平行細縱紋，背鰭中央及前方、及尾鰭基各具一鑲藍邊的黑斑。成魚體藍綠色，體上半部具五條不明顯的褐色橫帶，身體前半部及頭部具紅色的水平縱紋，體側眼斑漸消失，背鰭及臀鰭黃色具紅色縱紋，尾鰭具弧型的紅紋。

主要棲息於溫暖淺水珊瑚礁區及岩岸海域，深度約0-15公尺的海域。主要以底棲性甲殼類、軟體動物、多毛類、有孔類、小魚及魚卵等為食。具性轉變的行為，是屬於先雌後雄型的型態。

Morfologia
Els mascles poden assolir els 12 cm de longitud total.[2]
Distribució geogràfica
Es troba des del Japó fins a la Gran Barrera de Corall, Samoa i Tonga. És substituït per Halichoeres vrolikii a l'Oceà Índic.[2]

The tail-spot wrasse, Halichoeres melanurus, is a species of wrasse in the western Pacific from Japan to Samoa and Tonga and south to the Great Barrier Reef. This species is found along rocky shores or on coral reefs at depths from 1 to 15 m (3.3 to 49.2 ft). It can reach 12 cm (4.7 in) in total length. This species is popular for display in public aquaria[2] and can be found in the aquarium trade.[1]
The male of the species is more vibrant in colour generally, and when placed in the vicinity of one or more females may "flash" his colours with dramatically increased intensity. The female can be easily differentiated from the male by the presence of ocelli markings (eye spots) on the dorsal and caudal fins.

Vissen Halichoeres melanurus is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van lipvissen (Labridae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1851 door Bleeker.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2008.[1]
