Der Mahébrillenvogel[1] (Zosterops modestus), auch als Seychellen-Brillenvogel bezeichnet, ist ein seltener grasmückenartiger Singvogel aus der Familie der Brillenvögel (Zosteropidae). Er ist endemisch auf den Seychellen.
Dieser 10 bis 11 cm große Vogel hat ein Gefieder mit einer olivgrauen Oberseite und einer blasser gefärbten Unterseite. Er ist weiter durch einen weißen, engen Augenring, einen ziemlich langen, dunkelgrauen Schwanz und einen kleinen scharfen Schnabel gekennzeichnet.
Seine Nahrung besteht aus Insektenlarven, Heuschrecken und Grashüpfern sowie aus Beeren und Samen. Die Brutzeit ist von September bis April und in das schalenförmige Nest werden zwei bis sieben Eier gelegt. Die Inkubationszeit beträgt 13 bis 15 Tage und die Jungen werden nach 11 bis 16 Tagen flügge. Anschließend werden sie noch weitere zwei Monate von den Eltern betreut. Der melodiöse und komplexe Gesang des Mahé-Brillenvogels besteht aus nasalen Lauten. Aufgrund seiner Lebensweise im Blätterdach von hohen Bäumen ist er schwer zu beobachten.
Der Mahébrillenvogel galt zwischen 1935 und 1960 als ausgestorben, bis er im Hochland von Mahé wiederentdeckt wurde. Noch 1996 galt er mit einem bekannten Bestand von 25 bis 35 Individuen als einer der seltensten Vögel der Welt. Dieser drastische Rückgang war vor allem durch Waldrodungen, die Konkurrenz durch eingeführte Vogelarten wie den Hirtenmaina und durch Ratten verursacht worden. 1997 wurden ca. 250 Exemplare auf der Seychelleninsel Conception wiederentdeckt. 1998 war der Bestand auf Mahé wieder auf 50 gestiegen. Heute liegt die Population auf Conception zwischen 244 und 336 Exemplaren. In den Jahren 2001 und 2003 wurde eine Auswilderungsaktion auf Frégate gestartet. Auf dieser Insel befindet sich heute ein Bestand von 60 Vögeln.

The Seychelles white-eye (Zosterops modestus) is a rare warbler-like perching bird from the family of white-eyes (Zosteropidae). It is endemic to the Seychelles. At one time thought to be extinct, it was rediscovered and is now listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
This ten-to-eleven-centimetre (3.9 to 4.3 in) long bird has a plumage of olive-grey upper-parts and dull-coloured underparts. It is further characterized by a narrow, white eye-ring, a rather long dark-grey tail and a small sharp bill. Its diet consists of insect larvae, locusts, and grasshoppers as well as berries and seeds. The Seychelles white-eye's breeding season is from September to April, in which a clutch of two to seven eggs is laid into a cup-shaped nest. The incubation time is thirteen to fifteen days and the young are fully fledged after eleven to sixteen days. After that, adults look after their young for another two months. The species' melodious and complex song consists of nasal tones. Due to its ecology and foraging habits (in the canopy of high trees) it is difficult to observe.[2]
The existence of an amazingly complex cooperative breeding system was discovered among Seychelles white-eyes. It is apparently unique among all species of white-eyes and appears as a very peculiar social breeding organisation among birds in general. Within the same breeding territory, the individual composition of nesting groups constantly changes, often involving birds that sometimes also contribute to nests in other territories.[3]
Zosterops modestus was thought to be extinct between 1935 and 1960 until it was rediscovered in the highlands of Mahé. Even in 1996 it was considered one of the rarest birds in the world, with a population of only 25-35 individuals. The dramatic decline in population was caused by the extensive clearing of forests, competition with introduced birds (especially with the common myna), and from rat predation. In 1997, a population of about 250 individuals was rediscovered on the island of Conception. In 1998, the population on Mahé was estimated to be about 50. Currently the population on Conception Island consists of between 244 and 336 individuals. In 2001, the Island Conservation Society led a project to transfer 31 birds to the Seychelles island of Frégate. The population has since increased to more than 60 birds. Further transfers of birds have been made to North Island, Seychelles and to Cousine Island. Birds subsequently died out on Cousine, but transfers to other islands have been successful, increasing the world population to perhaps 500.[2]

Mide de 10 a 11 cm de largo. Su plumaje es color gris oliva y en sus zonas inferiores el plumaje es más claro. Se caracteriza por su fino anillo ocular blanco, una cola larga gris oscuro y un pequeño pico afilado.
Su dieta consiste de larvas de insectos, langostas, y saltamontes además de bayas y semillas. La temporada de reproducción se extiende de septiembre a abril y su puesta consta de dos a siete huevos que pone en un nido en forma de taza. El período de incubación va de trece a quince días y los pichones están emplumados por completo luego de once a dieciséis días. Los padres los cuidan durante unos dos meses adicionales. Su canto complejo y melodioso consiste en tonos nasales. A causa de su ecología y de que se alimenta en la fronda de árboles elevados es una especie difícil de observar.[4]
Se ha descubierto que esta especie posee un sistema muy complejo de reproducción cooperativa. Aparentemente es único entre todas las especies de anteojitos y tiene una organización social reproductiva muy peculiar entre las aves en general. Dentro de un mismo territorio reproductor, la composición individual de los grupos de anidado se modifica constantemente, a menudo con participación de ejemplares que a veces colaboran en nidos ubicados en otros territorios.[5]
Entre 1935 y 1960 se pensó que la especie se había extinguido, hasta que se la redescubrió en los montes de la isla de Mahé. Aun en 1996 estaba considerada una de las aves más escasas del mundo con una población de solo 25 a 35 individuos. El dramático descenso de la población fue producto de la tala de bosque, la competencia especialmente con el miná común y depredación por ratas. En 1997 se descubrieron unos 250 individuos en la isla Concepción en Seychelles. En 1998 se estimaba que la población en Mahé era de unos 50 ejemplares. Actualmente la población de la isla Concepción se estima asciende a unos 300 individuos.

Le Zostérops des Seychelles ou Oiseau-lunettes des Seychelles (Zosterops modestus) est une espèce d'oiseaux de la famille des Zosteropidae endémique des Seychelles.
Cet oiseau était en 1996 comme étant en voie d'extinction : 50 individus confinés sur l’île de Mahé, jusqu'à la découverte d’une nouvelle population de 280 individus sur l’île déserte de Conception, à moins d’un mille de Mahé.
En 2001 a été entamé un programme de réintroduction sur l’île de Frégate.

De mahébrilvogel (Zosterops modestus) is een zangvogel uit de familie Zosteropidae (brilvogels). Het is een kwetsbaar endemische vogelsoort op de Seychellen, een archipel bij Afrika ten noorden van Madagaskar in de Indische Oceaan.
De vogel is 10 cm lang. Het is een typische brilvogel, van boven dof olijfgroen tot grijs en lichtgrijs van onder met een relatief smalle witte oogring en een kleine, spitse snavel.
In 1996 dacht men dat er alleen nog op het eiland Mahé enkele tientallen vogels aanwezig waren. Een jaar later werd op een klein eilandje (Conception, 60 ha) twee kilometer ten westen van Mahé een populatie van honderden vogels ontdekt. Daarna werden tientallen vogels gevangen en geherintroduceerd op de eilanden North Island en Cousine. Al deze populaties werden in aantal gevolgd. In 2013 werd de totale populatie geschat op 500 tot 600 individuen. Tussen de verschillende populaties zijn kleine verschillen in habitatgebruik. Op Mahé is een voorkeur voor door de mens beïnvloede landschappen rond boerderijen en dorpen en op Conception hebben de vogels eerder een voorkeur voor natuurlijk bos met vruchtdragende bomen.
Als typische eiland-endeem heeft deze brilvogel een beperkt verspreidingsgebied en daardoor is de kans op uitsterven aanwezig. De grootte van de populatie werd in 2016 door BirdLife International geschat op 250 tot 999 individuen. De populaties zijn waarschijnlijk in aantal stabiel. Potentiële dreigingen voor deze soort zijn: het sterk versnipperde karakter van de populatie, de kap van grote bomen en ingevoerde invasieve planten en dieren waaronder ratten en de treurmaina die het broedsucces ongunstig kunnen beïnvloeden. Dat is waarom de soort als kwetsbaar staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN.[1]
