Vive nos montes de la Amazonia, el piedemonte oriental de los Andes,[5] la Orinoquia y nes zones costeres del Atlánticu de les Guayanas y Brasil.[4][6]
Mide ente 8,6[6] a 9[7] cm de llargor y pesa de 1,8[6] a 2,5[8] g. Ye unu de los páxaros más pequeños.[9] El so pechu, banduyu y rabadilla son de color óxidu o naranxa acoloratáu. Presenta cazu y llixos na base de les pates blancucies o amarellentaes. Partes cimeros con pintes negres, color castañu ablondu o acoloratáu. El machu presenta una estrecha faxa negra al altor del pechu y corona. La fema tien una coloración más pálida y nun tener la faxa negra. El picu, curvado, tien 2 a 2,3 cm de llargu.[5]
Constrúi ente fueyes de palmeres un nial, a un altor del suelu de 1 a 3 m, con forma de bolsa, utilizando nidies, telaraña y restos vexetales. La fema pon 2 güevos blancos y guara mientres unos 15 díes. Los pitucos nacen col picu curtio y nidio, como tolos colibríes, y abandonen el nial dempués de 18 a 22 díes.[6]

Der Rote Zwergschattenkolibri (Phaethornis ruber), auch Rotbaucheremit, Rotschattenkolibri oder Rotbürzelkolibri genannt, ist ein nur 9 Zentimeter großer Vertreter aus der Familie der Kolibris.
Der Rote Zwergschattenkolibri hat ein rot gefärbtes Gefieder am Bauch und Hals. Der obere Kopfbereich ist dunkelgrün, der Rücken und der Schwanz sind braun gefärbt. Der obere Schnabelteil ist silbern. Der untere Teil des Schnabels, die Unterseite des Schwanzes und die Beine sind schwarz. Hinter dem Auge und an der Brust hat er einen auffälligen dicken, schwarzen Streifen und im Beinbereich ist das Gefieder weiß. Das Gesamtgewicht der Vögel beträgt nur ca. 2 Gramm.
Auf der Suche nach seiner Nahrung, vor allem Nektar und Insekten, fliegt er durch die Urwälder von Guyana, Kolumbien, Venezuela, Bolivien und Brasilien. Dort bewohnt er das Unterholz der Regenwälder sowie Büsche und Bäume der Waldränder. Dieser kleine Vogel besetzt ein Revier, welches er energisch gegen Artgenossen verteidigt. Durch seine schnellen Flügelschläge erzeugt er ein brummendes Geräusch, ähnlich dem von Hummeln. Der Gesang der Vögel, welcher von der Morgendämmerung bis abends zu hören ist, wird als lauter Quietschton beschrieben.
Im Gegensatz zu den anderen Kolibriarten besitzt dieser eine besonders geformte Oberarmsehne, wie auch andere Vertreter seiner Gattung.
Zur Fortpflanzungszeit tragen mehrere Männchen ihre Gesänge, schrille und laute Rufe, in einer so genannten Balzarena den Weibchen vor. Die Weibchen wählen danach selbst ihre Paarungspartner aus. Die keulenförmigen Nester der Vögel befinden sich in Bodennähe, meist am Ende langer Palmenwedel.
Obwohl der Bestand abgenommen hat, ist diese Art noch relativ häufig anzutreffen, deshalb führt die IUCN diese Art in der Kategorie (Least Concern) nicht gefährdet.
Laut der IOC World Bird list werden vier Unterarten unterschieden, die sich in ihrer Färbung, ihrer Größe und ihrem Verbreitungsgebiet unterscheiden:[1]
Carl von Linné beschrieb den Kolibri ursprünglich unter dem Namen Trochilus ruber. Das Typusexemplar zur Beschreibung stammte aus Suriname.[3]
Der Begriff „Phaethornis“ leitet sich aus den griechischen Worten „phaethōn Φαέθων“ für „der Leuchtende, der Strahlende“ und „órnis, όρνις“ für „Vogel“ ab.[6] Das Artepitheton „ruber“ ist das lateinische Wort für „rot“.[7] Auch „episcopus“ ist lateinischen Ursprungs und steht für „Bischof“, in Anspielung auf das deutlich dickere schwarze Brustband dieser Unterart.[8] Auch „nigricinctus“ bezieht sich auf das schwarze Band. Dabei handelt es sich um eine lateinische Wortkombination aus den Worten „niger“ für „schwarz“ und „cinctus, cingere“ für „gebändert, umranden“.[9] Das Wort „longipennis“ ist ebenfalls lateinischen Ursprungs und setzt sich aus den Worten „longus“ für „lang“ und „penna“ für „Feder“ zusammen. Die Namensgebung bezieht sich auf die etwas längeren Flügel dieser Unterart.[10]

In 1743 the English naturalist George Edwards included a picture and a description of the reddish hermit in his A Natural History of Uncommon Birds. He used the English name "The little brown huming-bird". Edwards based his etching on a specimen owned by the Duke of Richmond that had been collected in Suriname.[4] When in 1758 the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus updated his Systema Naturae for the tenth edition, he placed the reddish hermit with the hummingbirds in the genus Trochilus. Linnaeus included a brief description, coined the binomial name Trochilus ruber, and cited Edwards' work.[5] The specific epithet ruber is a Latin word meaning "red".[6] The type locality is Suriname.[7] The reddish hermit is now placed in the genus Phaethornis that was introduced in 1827 by William Swainson.[8][3] The reddish hermit has sometimes been considered conspecific with the white-browed hermit (P. stuarti).[9]
Four subspecies are recognised:[3]
Some introgression has been noted between the nominate P. r. ruber and P. r. longipennis. P. r. episcopus and P. r. nigricinctus might actually be separate species but data to confirm the hypothesis are lacking. The population of P. r. ruber in southeastern Brazil has been proposed as a separate subspecies P. r. pygmaeus but its apparent differences are within the range of variation in the rest of ruber.[9]
The reddish hermit is 8 to 9 cm (3.1 to 3.5 in) long and weighs 1.8 to 3 g (0.06 to 0.11 oz). All subspecies are generally dark green and rufous on the upperparts and cinnamon rufous on the underparts. Males have a black band on the chest and the tail feather have narrow white or reddish tips. Females have lighter underparts than the males. P. r. episcopus is about the same size as the nominate but has orange-rufous rather than cinnamon-rufous underparts and white tips to the tail. P. r. nigricinctus is the smallest subspecies; it has the richest rufous underparts. P. r. longipennis is the largest subspecies. It has a whitish chin and its central tail feathers have rufous tips.[9]

The reddish hermit's breeding seasons vary throughout its large range; in general in the north it is within May to October and in the south within October to February. The nest is a cone-shaped cup made of plant fibers, mosses, lichens, other plant material, and spider web. It is attached under a drooping leaf. The clutch size is two eggs and the female alone incubates them.[9]
The reddish hermit's song is "a high-pitched phrase repeated incessantly with clear pauses between phrases...evenly-spaced, slightly descending, single notes followed by a number of accelerating descending notes, e.g. 'tsee....tsee...tsee...tsee.tse.tsitsi'." It frequently sings for long periods at leks. It has "long whining calls" made while hovering and a "stip!" flight call.[9]
The IUCN has assessed the reddish hermit as being of Least Concern, though its population size is unknown and is believed to be decreasing.[1] It has a very large range, is considered "locally common to abundant", and occurs in several protected areas.[9]
