Mesostigmatophyceae je třída zelených řas nově vyčleněná z parafyletického oddělení Charophyta (parožnatky v širším smyslu) na základě molekulárně-biologických fylogenetických analýz.

Jedná se o vodní řasy. Jednu vývojovou linii (Mesostigmatales) tvoří řasy jednobuněčné, volně pohyblivé. Řasy druhé linie (Chaetosphaeridiales) tvoří vláknité stélky, obalené společnou trubičkou z buněčné stěny bez plazmodezmat, bičíkaté jsou jejich jednobuněčné zoospory.

Jednobuněčná bičíkatá stadia mají zploštělé oválné buňky bez dvoustranné symetrie a dva bičíky přibližně stejné délky. Buňky obsahují jeden mističkovitý chloroplasty ohraničený dvojitou membránou.

Mesostigmatophyceae je razred slatkovodnih zelenih algi[1][2][3] koji ima samo dvije vrste jednog roda.[4]

Ranije studije nisu mogle razriješiti položaj vrste, pa je često postavljana kao sestrinska svim ostalim zelenim algama, kao jedan od baznih članova Streptophyta ili što bliže grupi Chaetosphaeridium.[5][6][7] Studije iz 2000-ih slažu se da Mesostigma, Chlorokybus i Spirotaenia formiraju kladus, sa najranije divergiranim zelenim algama.[2][8][9][10][11]

Mesostigma su jedini poznati streptofiti koji u vegetativnom stanju imaju bičeve.[12]

The Mesostigmatophyceae are a class of basal green algae found in freshwater.[3][4][5] In a narrow circumscription, the class contains a single genus, Mesostigma.[6] AlgaeBase then places the order within its circumscription of Charophyta.[1] A clade containing Chlorokybus and Spirotaenia may either be added,[7][8][9][10][11][12] or treated as a sister, with Chlorokybus placed in a separate class, Chlorokybophyceae.[13] When broadly circumscribed, Mesostigmatophyceae may be placed as sister to all other green algae, or as sister to all Streptophyta.[14][15][16]

Mesostigmatophyceae é um grupo basal de algas verdes,[1][2] geralmente tratado ao nível taxonómico de classe, do qual apenas se conhece um género (Mesostigma) com duas espécies.[3]

Descrição

Durante muito tempo não foi possível determinar com certeza a posição das duas espécies deste grupo que estão validamente descritas. O grupo tem sido frequentemente considerado como grupo irmão de todas as restantes algas verdes, como um dos membros basais das Streptophyta, ou como parente próximo de Chaetosphaeridium.[4][5][6]

Estudos mais recentes apontam para que Mesostigma, Chlorokybus e Spirotaenia formem um clade, constituindo o primeiro conjunto de algas verdes a divergir evolutivamente e a formar uma linhagem autónoma.[2][7][8][9]
