Diagnosed from its congeners by the possession of the following characters: lateral line usually with 30-38 + 2-3 scales; 3-4 (usually 3) scale rows between lateral line and pelvic fin origin; 11-12 circumpeduncular scale rows; eye diameter smaller than snout length; snout rounded, obtuse; and ventral profile of head with a marked angle at articulation of lower jaw (Ref. 59043).

Occur in coastal rivers and terminal segments of main rivers. Adults are found commonly in lower reaches of rivers (Ref. 59043). Threatened due to pollution and habitat destruction (Ref. 26100).

Els mascles poden assolir els 25 cm de longitud total.[3][4]
Distribució geogràfica
Es troba a Portugal.[5][3] També es troben com a espècie introduïda als estanys de les Açores, sobretot a São Miguel i Pico.

Achondrostoma oligolepis is a species of cyprinid fish. It is endemic to central and northern Portugal and known from between Limia and Tornada drainages, south of Douro.[1][3] It occurs in the lower stretches of rivers and streams.[1] It can grow to 25 cm (9.8 in) total length, although it typically measures about 15 cm (5.9 in) TL.[3]
Taxonomy
This species was first described as Leuciscus macrolepidotus by Franz Steindachner in 1866, but this name was preoccupied by Leuciscus macrolepidotus Ayres, 1854. Therefore, a new replacement name Chondrostoma oligolepis was given to it in 2005. A later revision placed the taxon in another genus, giving the current combination in use.[2]

L'Achondrostoma oligolepis (Robalo, Doadrio, Almada & Kottelat, 2005), noto comunemente come ruivaca, è un pesce d'acqua dolce appartenente alla famiglia Cyprinidae.
Distribuzione e habitat
È una specie endemica del Portogallo, il suo areale è compreso tra il fiume Limia ed il Tornada.
Vive nel corso inferiore dei corsi d'acqua.
Descrizione
Molto simile agli altri Achondrostoma come A. arcasii e A. occidentale da cui si distingue per le scaglie più grandi e per il muso arrotondato (differenza con A. oligolepis). Inoltre la mascella inferiore forma un angolo netto con il profilo del capo.
Misura fino a 15 cm.
Biologia
Ignota.
Conservazione
Si tratta di una specie ben distribuita, comunque l'inquinamento, la distruzione dell'habitat (soprattutto l'estrazione di inerti dal letto dei fiumi) e l'emungimento di acqua hanno causato una certa diminuzione delle popolazioni.
