Eye reduced; scales on lateral line 26-29 + 1-2; back humped behind nape; ventral profile almost as arched as dorsal profile; head conical; mouth almost terminal; and color pale grey in juveniles, pinkish with yellow hue in adults (Ref. 51711).

A cave inhabitant. Juveniles inhabit close to the cave entrance, subadults and adults occur deeper, at least 100 m from the entrance. Juveniles occupy the whole water column, from surface to bottom. Subadults and adults stay close to the bottom and midwater, usually in slow current. The stomach contents of 18 cm specimen include organic detritus, possibly bat guano, and calcareous ooze of the limestone weathering.

Neolissochilus subterraneus is a species of cyprinid cavefish that is endemic to the Tham Phra Wang Daeng cave within Thung Salaeng Luang National Park, Phitsanulok Province in Thailand. The genus name derives from the Greek words "neos", "lissos", and "cheilos"; they mean new, smooth, and lip respectively.
