Engraulicypris sardella (Günther 1868)

Steely blue coloration on upper part and silvery blue on lower part of the body. Dorsal-fin origin above anal-fin origin.

Feeding activity of adult E. sardella starts at sunrise. Within 1-2 hrs., maximum degree of fullness is reached. For data on stomach fullness, refer to LARVAE of E. sardella of length >10.5 mm from Ref. 4366. Larvae are also day-time feeders. This truly pelagic species supports a large commercial fishes in Malawi(Ref. 4967).

Caught using plunge nets, chirimilas or beach seines (lamparas) with light (Ref. 4967). Occurs over sandy bottoms in the morning and move a little offshore later during the day (Ref. 5595). Forms schools (Ref. 4365).
