The Trinidad motmot (Momotus bahamensis) is a colorful near-passerine bird endemic to the forests and woodlands of Trinidad and Tobago. This species and the blue-capped motmot, Lesson's motmot, whooping motmot, Amazonian motmot, and Andean motmot were all considered conspecific. Though found on both islands, this bird is more abundant in Tobago than it is in Trinidad.
The central crown is black and surrounded by a blue band. There is a black eyemask. The call is a low owl-like ooo-doot.
These birds often sit still, and in their dense forest habitat can be difficult to see, despite their size. They eat small prey such as insects, spiders, earthworms,[2] lizards, small snakes and fledgling birds,[3] and will also regularly take fruit. They are known to eat small tree snails, and to use forest floor rocks as 'anvils' to crack open the hard shells of these prey items to access the soft edible bodies within.
Like most of the Coraciiformes, motmots nest in tunnels in banks, laying about three or four white eggs.

En Trinidad, es encontrado en el interior de selvas húmedas de baja altitud; en Tobago ocupa zonas más amplias, especialmente plantaciones de cacao, y hasta en ambientes más abiertos como pastajes que retienen árboles grandes.[4]
La especie M. bahamensis fue descrita por primera vez por el naturalista británico William Swainson en 1838 bajo el nombre científico «Prionites bahamensis»; localidad tipo «Islas Bahamas (error) = Trinidad».[3]
El nombre genérico masculino «Momotus» deriva de la palabra azteca «momot» utilizada para designar a estas aves por Nieremberg 1635, Willughby 1676, y Ray 1713, y «motmot» por Hernández 1651;[5] y el nombre de la especie «bahamensis», se refiere a la localidad tipo errada de la especie, las Islas Bahamas.[6]
La presente especie, junto a Momotus coeruliceps, M. subrufescens y M. lessonii fueron hasta recientemente consideradas como subespecies del entonces complejo Momotus momota. El estudio de Stiles (2009), que examinó un total de 512 especímenes, y con base en los patrones de plumaje, biométricas y vocalizaciones, suplementado por informaciones de distribución geográfica y ecología, justificó su reconocimiento como especies separadas.[7] La separación fue aprobada en la Propuesta N° 412 al Comité de Clasificación de Sudamérica (SACC).[8]

Длина тела птицы 38—43 см, масса тела 99—114 грамм[2]. По сравнению с другими момотами у данного вида более рыжий цвет горла и брюшка и самый короткий хвост среди всех видов рода. Momotus bahamensis легко отличить: у других момотов чёрную «маску» на голове окантовывает тонкая голубая полоска, но у данного вида это голубые пятна, которые располагаются сбоку и снизу.
Обычно Momotus bahamensis издаёт одиночный звук «вуп», чем он похож на Momotus subrufescens.
Обитает на территории Тринидада и Тобаго. Селится в лесах, но можно встретить и на плантациях и в садах.
Как и все момоты питается насекомыми и другими членистоногими, ящерицами и мелкими млекопитающими.
