Der Samoabrillenvogel (Zosterops samoensis) ist eine Vogelart aus der Familie der Brillenvögel. Er ist endemisch für Savai'i in Samoa.

Merkmale

Der Samoabrillenvogel erreicht eine Länge von 10 Zentimetern. Das Gefieder und der Vorderkopf sind gelblich-grün. Der Scheitel und Oberseite dunkel citrin-farben. Die Handschwingen und Schwanzfedern sind braunschwarz. Kehle und Unterschwanz sind hellgelb und die Flanken Unterflügeldecken sind weißlich. Die Flanken sind gelblich-grün mit Spuren von Ocker. Der Schnabel ist auf der Oberseite braun, unterseits gelb; die Füße sind grau oder grünlich. Der namengebende, schmale weiße Ring um die gelblich-weiße Iris ist mehr oder weniger nach vorn offen. Der Unterschied zum nah verwandten Einfarb-Brillenvogel (Zosterops sanctaecrucis) besteht in dem weißen Augenring, der fahlen Iris, dem kürzeren Fuß und der geringeren Größe. Die Geschlechter unterscheiden sich nicht, Jungtiere sind nicht beschrieben.^[1]

Laute

Die Rufe bestehen aus hohen tchee oder cheeer-Lauten, gelegentlich mit gurgelnden Elementen, ähnlich wie beim Haussperling (Passer domesticus). Die Rufe werden von den ziehenden Grüppchen fast ständig abgegeben und ein Abendlied besteht aus Doppelnoten, die den Rufen ähnlich sind, aber in Sequenzen von 3–5 Paaren zusammengesetzt sind: „tee-deer, tee-dee, tee-deer, tee-dee, tee-deer“.

Lebensraum und Lebensweise

Die Vögel bewohnen Waldland, Wälder und Gärten in Höhen über 900 m, gelegentlich bis auf 780 m. Nach einem Zyklon 1991 wurde er auch in Buschland beobachtet. Seine Nahrung besteht aus Insekten, Früchten und Nektar. Bei der Nahrungssuche bewegt er sich in kleinen Gruppen von sechs bis zwanzig Individuen in den Baumkronen. Die Brutzeit ist im südlichen Sommer, bis in den Mai.

Gefährdung und Schutz

Die Art ist stark auf ein begrenztes Gebiet mit einer Fläche von 520 km² beschränkt. Die Gesamtpopulation wird auf ca. 2500 Exemplare geschätzt. Die verbleibenden Lebensräume sind durch Wanderfeldbau und Holzernte gefährdet. Außerdem hat die Erschließung zu einer stärkeren Besiedlung des Lebensraumes geführt und fremde Raubtiere sowie eingeschleppte verwandte Arten (Z. japonicus, Z. lateralis) werden als weitere Bedrohung angesehen. Die Art kommt in drei Nationalparks vor, unter anderem dem Mount Silisili Park.

Vogels

De savaibrilvogel (Zosterops samoensis) is een zangvogel uit de familie Zosteropidae (brilvogels). De vogel werd in 1929 geldig beschreven door Robert Cushman Murphy en Gregory Mathews. De vogels zaten in een collectie balgen die in de jaren 1920 waren verzameld tijdens Amerikaanse wetenschappelijke expedities langs eilanden in de Grote Oceaan. De Nederlandse naam verwijst naar het eiland Savai'i, het grootste van de Samoa-eilanden (een republiek in Polynesië). Het is een kwetsbare, endemische vogelsoort.

Kenmerken

De vogel is 10 cm lang. Het is een typische brilvogel met duidelijke witte oogringen, die nergens worden onderbroken. Het oog is licht van kleur. Verder is de vogel olijfgroen van boven en van onder vuilwit tot lichtgrijs, op de keel iets geelachtig. De snavel is bruin van boven en geel van onder. De poten zijn groenachtig.^[3]

Verspreiding en leefgebied

Deze soort is endemisch op het eiland Savai'i. Het leefgebied bestaat uit natuurlijk bos op hellingen boven de 900 meter boven zeeniveau. De vogel heeft de voorkeur voor bosranden en open stukken met struikgewas.

Status

De savaibrilvogel heeft een beperkt verspreidingsgebied en daardoor is de kans op uitsterven aanwezig. De grootte van de populatie werd in 2016 door BirdLife International geschat op 1000 tot 2500 individuen en de populatie-aantallen nemen af door habitatverlies. Het leefgebied wordt aangetast door ontbossing zoals die in toenemende mate wordt toegepast bij zwerflandbouw. Om deze redenen staat deze soort als kwetsbaar op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN.^[1]
