Aralia stipulata Franch.

Wen (Cathaya 15-16: 48-52. 2004) circumscribed this species more broadly to encompass material from Gansu, Hubei, Shaanxi, and Sichuan (including the types of Aralia gaoshania and A. taibaiensis; see A. elata var. elata in the present treatment).

Shrubs or small trees, 2-10 m tall, andromonoecious. Branches nearly unarmed, with swollen, conic prickles at base. Leaves 2-pinnately compound, with a pair of accessory leaflets at each division of rachis; petiole to ca. 15 cm, glabrous, unarmed; petiolules to 4 mm; leaflets 3-11 per pinna, ovate to narrowly ovate, 5-12 × 2.5-8 cm, papery to subleathery, both surfaces glabrous, abaxially rarely pilose on veins, secondary veins 6 or 7 pairs, base rounded, margin serrate, apex acute to acuminate. Inflorescence a terminal panicle of umbels, unarmed; primary axis to 45 cm; secondary axes 30-45 cm; ultimate axes with a terminal umbel of bisexual flowers and 1 to several lateral umbels of male flowers; bracts persistent, lanceolate, 8-15 mm; umbels 20-40-flowered; pedicels 8-12 mm, pubescent. Ovary 5-carpellate; styles 5, united basally, free apically. Fruit globose, ca. 3 mm in diam.; styles persistent, recurved. Fl. Jun-Aug.

Aralia stipulata is close relative of A. gintungensis, but differs from the latter in its glabrous (vs. pubescent to tomentose) stipules, leaves and inflorescences.

Aralia stipulata is occurring in Chongqing, Gansu, Hubei, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Xizang of China.

The phylogeny of Aralia sect. Dimorphanthus has been inferred using the ITS sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA (Wen, 2000). The ITS phylogeny suggests a Aralia gintungensis, A. officinalis, A. stipulata and A. undulata form a clade. This group of species has relatively large bracts and bracteole (Wen, 2004). Based on the morphological variation, Wen (1993) provided a generic delimitation of Aralia, in which Arala stipulata belong to section Dimorphanthus.

Shrubs or treelets, 2-10 m tall, sometimes forming large clones in sunny habitats, bark dark gray, with conical prickles swollen at the base. Leaves bipinnate, with 3-5 pinnae, each 3-11-foliolate, 40-105 cm long, 30-80 cm wide, pinnae up to 40 cm long; stipules adnate to the base of the petiole, base almost sheathing the stem, the adnate portion 2.5-3 cm long, the separate part narrowly triangular to lanceolate, 7-10 mm long, sometimes united; petioles reddish or purplish, unarmed, glabrous; rachises glabrous, unarmed, subtended by a pair of accessory leaflets at each division; leaflets ovate to narrowly ovate, 5-12 cm long, 2.5-6 cm wide, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, subsessile or petiolules 1-4 mm long, apex acuminate to acute, base rounded, margins serrate or coarsely so, lateral veins 6-7, adaxial surfaces green, glabrous, abaxial surface glaucous, glabrous or occasionally slightly pilose on midrids and veins, rarely pubescent. Inflorescences terminal, 50-75 cm long, 60-70 cm wide, purplish or purplish green, paniculate with a main axis, up to 45 cm long, branching in 2 orders, primary branches up to 10-12, 30-45 cm long; bracts and bracteoles persistent, secondary bracts lanceolate, 8-15 mm long, bracteoles lanceolate to linnear, 2.5-3.5 mm long; umbels 20-40-flowered, pedicels pubescent, 8-12 mm long. Flowers greenish yellow or whitish. Sepals minute, triangular. Petals yellowish green, ovate, 2-2.5 mm long. Stamens 5, filaments white, 3-4 mm long; anthers oblong, yellow. Ovary 5-locular; styles 5-divided, connate at the base. Nectaries yellow. Fruit globose, ca. 3 mm in diameter, purple-black when mature, persistent styles radiating with connate bases.

Growing in thickets, mountains slopes, hillsides, roadsides, along ravines; 1400-3500 m.

Arala stipulata is here defined to its usually glabrous leaflets, relatively long and obvious stipules, flattened but large and sheathing petiole base enclosing about 2/3 of the diameter of stem, coronulate cuticle on the abaxial leaflet surface, primary inflorescences branches forming a large paniculate structure, and relatively long pedicels of terminal umbels (mostly 8-12 mm).

The young shoots and leaves of Aralia stipulata are edible.
