Isthmomys és un gènere de rosegadors de la família dels cricètids. Conté dues espècies oriündes de Centreamèrica (Panamà i extrem nord-occidental de Colòmbia). Tenen una llargada de cap a gropa de 15–20 cm i una cua de 16–21 cm. El pelatge dorsal és de color marró groguenc o rogenc, mentre que el ventre i les potes són de color blanc. El seu hàbitat natural són els boscos montans situats a altituds d'entre 800 i 1.600 msnm.

Die Isthmusratten (Isthmomys) sind eine in Mittelamerika lebende Nagetiergattung aus der Gruppe der Neuweltmäuse. Sie umfasst zwei Arten.
Merkmale
Isthmusratten erreichen eine Kopfrumpflänge von 15 bis 20 Zentimeter und eine Schwanzlänge von 16 bis 21 Zentimeter. Das Fell ist an der Oberseite gelbbraun oder rotbraun gefärbt, der Bauch und die Füße sind weiß.
Verbreitung und Lebensraum
Diese Nagetiere kommen nur in Panama und im äußersten Nordwesten von Kolumbien vor. Sie leben in Gebirgswäldern in 800 bis 1600 Metern Höhe. Sie sind vorwiegend Bodenbewohner und legen Trampelpfade an. Sie errichten Nester, in denen sie auch ihre Jungen großziehen. Ansonsten ist über die Lebensweise wenig bekannt.
Systematik
Die Gattung Isthmomys wird als eigenständige Gattung der Wühler (Cricetidae) anerkannt, wo sie in die Tribus Reithrodontomyini innerhalb der Unterfamilie Neotominae eingeordnet wird. Die wissenschaftliche Erstbeschreibung stammt von den beiden Zoologen Emmet T. Hooper und Guy Musser, die sie 1964 von den Weißfußmäusen (Peromyscus) abgrenzten.[1] Sie sind eng mit den Weißfußmäusen (Peromyscus) verwandt, als deren Untergattung sie manchmal geführt werden. Die erkennbaren Unterschiede liegen vorwiegend in der Morphologie des Penis.
Es werden zwei Arten unterschieden:

Isthmomys flavidus lebt im westlichen Panama und hat ein gelbes Fell.

Isthomys pirrensis kommt im östlichen Panama und den angrenzenden Teilen Kolumbiens vor. Diese Art hat ein dunkel- oder rotbraunes Fell.
Beide Arten sind laut IUCN nicht gefährdet, diese Angabe ist jedoch veraltet.

Descrizione
Dimensioni
Al genere Isthmomys appartengono roditori di piccole e medie dimensioni, con lunghezza della testa e del corpo tra 150 e 200 mm e la lunghezza della coda tra 155 e 205 mm.[1]
Caratteristiche craniche e dentarie
Il cranio è robusto e presenta un rostro lungo e largo, le creste sopra-orbitali ben sviluppate e una sesta cuspide aggiuntiva sul primo molare superiore.
Sono caratterizzati dalla seguente formula dentaria:

L'aspetto è quello di un ratto ricoperto di una pelliccia lunga e densa. Le parti dorsali sono bruno-rossastre striate di nero oppure giallo-brunastre brillanti, mentre le parti ventrali sono bianco-giallastre o bianco-grigiastre. Il muso è appuntito, gli occhi sono grandi, le vibrisse sono lunghe ed ispessite. Le orecchie sono relativamente grandi. La coda è più lunga della testa e del corpo, scura, tozza e priva di peli. L'osso penico è più lungo del pene stesso il quale ha un'insolita forma a cono rovesciato con l'estremità notevolmente espansa.
Distribuzione
Si tratta di roditori terricoli diffusi a Panama e in Colombia.

Beskrivning
Dessa gnagare förekommer i Panama och angränsande delar av Colombia. De vistas där i låga och medelhöga bergstrakter som är upp till 1600 meter höga. Regionen är täckt av skog.[3]
Individerna når en kroppslängd (huvud och bål) av 15 till 20 cm och har en ungefär lika lång svans. Pälsens färg på ovansidan är beroende på art ockra eller kanelbrun. Buken har en ljusbrun till gulbrun färg och fötterna är mer eller mindre vitaktiga. Detaljer i genitaliernas konstruktion skiljer släktet från andra hamsterartade gnagare.[3]
Isthmomys bygger bon av bark och andra växtdelar som placeras i träd. En hona som observerades hade två ungar.[3]
