Shrub, 3-15 dm. high; branches when young silky-hairy, in age with brownish shreddy bark; stipules ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, scarious and veiny; leaves pinnate, with 3-7, usually 5, approximate leaflets, silky above, silky and whitish beneath ; leaflets in the typical form oblong, 1-2 cm. long, in the variety tenuifolia linear-oblong, or in var. monticola linear and only 5 mm. long, generally acute and with more or less revolute margins; flowers in small loose cymes or solitary, large, 1.5-3 cm. in diameter, or in var. monticola only 1 cm. wide ; hypanthium silkyvillous, in fruit about 1 cm. in diameter ; bractlets linear-oblong, generally slightly exceeding the broadly ovate acuminate sepals ; petals yellow, orbicular, often twice as long as the sepals.
Type locality: England.
Distribution : From Labrador to Alaska, California, New Mexico, and New Jersey ; also in Siberia and western Europe.
