Koperwieken zijn gezellige vogels, je ziet ze vaak in groepjes bij elkaar of samen met andere lijsters, zoals kramsvogels. Ze broeden in Scandinavië, vooral in berkenbossen. Daarom kun je ze hier alleen van september tot mei tegenkomen; in het najaar als ze op weg zijn naar hun zuidelijke overwinteringsplaatsen of in zachte winters als ze hier blijven overwinteren. Je kunt koperwieken heel gemakkelijk herkennen aan de oranje 'oksel' waar ze hun naam aan te danken hebben. In het kustgebied hoor je op herfstachtige avonden vaak de hele nacht lang overtrekkende koperwieken roepen: een ijl “tsieh!”.

Redwings are social birds; you often see them together in groups of other redwings or thrush species, such as the fieldfare. They breed in Scandinavia, particularly in birch woods. That is why you only see them here from September till May during their voyage to their southern winter areas. During mild winters, they will also stay here. Redwings are easy to identify by the reddish-orange spot under their wing. That's where their name comes from. During autumn evenings along the coast, you can often hear the migrating redwings the entire night, as they call out their thin 'tsieh'!
