Morphology

provided by EOL Interns LifeDesk

"Disc: Up to 25 mm in diameter, rounded, pentagonal and flat, and densely covered by rough, elongated granules. Radial shields are almost triangular (rounded), about one-tenth the diameter of the disc. The soft skin covering the disc often tears off during collection.

Arms: About 6.5 times longer than the disc diameter. The first ventral arm plate is u-shaped, and the proximal plates are pentagonal, then distally becoming more fan shaped with a thickened outer edge. The lateral arm plates have a prominent spine-bearing ridge. The lateral arm plates have a prominent spine-bearing ridge. Up to seven hollow, flat, blunt arm spines, ventrally decreasing in length. The longest spine equals four to seven arm joints. Each podial pore has two long, flat tentacle scales. The dorsal arm plates are diamond- to fan-shaped with a raised distal edge.

Mouth: The jaws have one (occasionally two) terminal oral papilla with five to seven long, flat oral papillae on each side. The oral shield is oval, wider than its length and sometimes with a small lobe extending distally. Adoral shields variable but usually surrounding the lateral wings of the oral shield.

Colour: Reddish-brown disc, and brown, glassy arm spines with white ligaments at their bases." (Lambert, Austin 2007)
