Annual bugloss is more leafy than flowers. The neck of each flower has a curve, giving it its foreign name 'crooked neck'. The hairy plant is rough to the touch, just like viper's bugloss. Each flower produces four nuts containing several hundred seeds. Annual bugloss grows in sunny areas, on plowed or fertilized, usually light and dry calcium-rich soils. It is fairly common in all Dutch dune regions. The seeds remain viable for years, awaiting suitable conditions.
