They are native to Eastern North America, Alaska, Greenland, Canada, and The Contiguous United States. They have simple, broad leaves, purple flowers, and capsule fruit. Flowers are visited by Polia richardsoni, Anarta richardsoni, and Parasyrphus tarsatus. Individuals can grow to 4 feet.
