Shrub or small, multi-stemmed tree. Leaves alternate, broadly obovate-oblong to almost circular, very rough on the upper surface, covered in soft rusty hairs below; margin entire or slightly toothed. Flowers white, cream or pale yellow in dense terminal heads; petals distinctly reflexed; calyces and stalks covered in yellowish hairs. Fruit fleshy, ovoid, orange-yellow when ripe, cupped in the persistent remains of the calyx.

Common in suitable habitats

Angola, Burundi, eastern DRC, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, South Africa as far as northern KwaZulu-Natal. Also in Arabia, Mauritius and Tropical Asia.

Cordia monoica, the sandpaper saucer-berry, or snot berry, is a species of flowering tree in the borage family, Boraginaceae, that is native to India, Sri Lanka and in African countries from Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Zimbabwe down to South Africa.
