El papamosques del paradís de Bates (Terpsiphone batesi) és un ocell de la família dels monàrquids (Monarchidae) que habita els boscos d'Àfrica Central, a Camerun, Gabon, est de la República Democràtica del Congo, sud-oest de la República del Congo i nord d'Angola.

Bates's paradise flycatcher (Terpsiphone batesi) is a passerine bird belonging to the monarch-flycatcher family, Monarchidae. The sexes are similar in appearance with the upper parts being rufous and the head and underparts being bluish-grey. It is native to central Africa where it is found in the understorey of forests.

Taxonomy and systematics

Its name commemorates the American ornithologist George Latimer Bates. Bates's paradise flycatcher was formerly considered as a subspecies of the rufous-vented paradise flycatcher but is now recognized as a separate species.^[2] An alternate name is the Cameroon rufous-vented paradise-flycatcher.

Subspecies

There are two subspecies recognized:^[3]

• T. b. batesi – Chapin, 1921: Found from southern Cameroon and Gabon to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
• Bannerman's paradise-flycatcher (T. b. bannermani) – Chapin, 1948: Formerly considered by some authorities as a separate species. Found in Congo, southwestern Democratic Republic of Congo and northern Angola

Description

Bates's paradise flycatcher is usually 18 centimetres long but males in parts of Cameroon and Angola have elongated central tail-feathers making them 23-28 centimetres long. The head and underparts are blue-grey while the upperparts are rufous. The sexes are similar in coloration. The song is a series of ringing "tswee" notes.

The rufous-vented paradise flycatcher is similar in appearance but has a darker head with a crest and males always have elongated central tail-feathers.

Distribution

It inhabits the understorey of forests. It occurs from Cameroon and the south-western Central African Republic through Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo and much of the Democratic Republic of the Congo south as far as north-west Angola.

El monarca colilargo de Bates (Terpsiphone batesi)^[1]​ es una especie de ave paseriforme de la familia Monarchidae nativa de África Central. Su nombre conmemora al ornitólogo norteamericano George Latimer Bates.

Por lo general mide unos 18 cm de largo, pero los machos en partes de Camerún y Angola poseen plumas centrales de la cola largas lo que incrementa su largo total a 23-28 cm. Su cabeza y partes inferiores del cuerpo son gris-azuladas mientras que su parte superior es rojizo. Ambos sexos poseen coloraciones similares. Su canto está formado por una serie de notas "tswee".

Habita en el sotobosque. Se lo encuentra en Camerún y el sur oeste de la República Centroafricana además de Guinea ecuatorial, Gabón, la República del Congo y gran parte de la zona sur de la República Democrática del Congo hasta el noroeste de Angola. Existen dos subespecies: T. b. batesi en el norte y T. b. bannermani en el sur.

Levinneisyys

Kameruninparatiisimonarkin alalajia batesi tavataan Etelä-Kamerunissa ja Gabonin itäosista Kongon demokraattisen tasavallan itäosiin ja alalajia bannermani Kongon tasavallassa, Kongon demokraattisen tasavallan lounaisosissa ja Pohjois-Angolassa.^[2]

Kongoparadismonark^[2] (Terpsiphone batesi) är en fågel i familjen kråkor inom ordningen tättingar.^[3] Tidigare betraktades den som underart till gabonparadismonark (T. rufocinerea). IUCN kategoriserar den som livskraftig.^[1]

Kongoparadismonark delas upp i två underarter:^[3]

• T. b. batesi – förekommer från södra Kamerun, Río Muni och Gabon till östra Demokratiska republiken Kongo
• T. b. bannermanni – förekommer från norra Angola till Demokratiska republiken Kongo (nedre Kongofloden och Republiken Kongo)
